The book is a collection of short stories, in which the author tries to bring to live memories from his earliest childhood days. The author was born in the latter part of World War II in Southern Germany and his conscious live started with the end of the war events. The stories attempt to give a child's perspective of this time and the following post-war years. It is not a war drama, but it also is not a recount of a Disney world childhood environment. It shows how children adapt to circumstances and how the life force in new generations emerges. Children try to have fun and play. So the stories also have playful and humorous aspects and as such are written for young and old readers. Pope Benedict XVI called the book a thoughtful presentation.
