Aggressive, impetuous, and dauntless, Richard Pape was never going to sit out the war in a Nazi prison. Captured after going on the run when his bomber crashed in occupied Holland, his thoughts turned, at once, to escape. In the most appalling of conditions, he did not give way. Not only did he send more than 100 coded messages to the War Office, but he also swapped identities with a fellow prisoner to make a breakout. His incredible escape was only the beginning of his struggle for freedom. Hunted by the Nazis across Europe, for Pape surrender was never an option.
Without doubt one of the best written works to have been published on this subject. A fascinating first-hand description of war-torn occupied Europe. Being shot down; evading capture; POW camp; interrogation; three escapes; gestapo torture - no novel could equal Pape's extraordinary tale of survival. I picked up a copy of this biography simply because, (like my late uncle Jack), Pape was a Yorkshire lad, and an RAF navigator. I began to read the book thinking it would be yet another ego trip by some unemployed former serviceman, but i was unable to put it down. I am gutted now it is finished and his story has been told.
Great story

I have read about 50 POW escape books, most from WW2. This guy was tough. Most of the escapers are amazing people. I think most the escape books have more humor than this one. Richard Pape wasn't about being funny he was determined to escape at all costs.

I just finish Richard Papes' novel about his exploits as a POW in Europe during WWII. He has a great ability to tell not only his story of survival and wartime intrigue but those of the Poles and other eastern Ethics group. If you ever needed a pick me in today's fast pace world this book is it.
