In ancient 14th century China, silk production was controlled by the emperor and there were severe penalties for violating this rule. Silk was as valuable as gold so a person who was willing to capture silk moths and take the silk from silk moth cocoons could make quite a fortune in money. The magician in this story is doing this but is caught by the Gypsy Moth named Boff who is brilliant and can communicate with humans and other insects. His efforts with the help of a speechless friend leads to the capture of the magician and his earning of a hero's medal from the Chinese emperor.
