Body of a Girl is about a twenty-something girl that has moved from her small village and into Paris. In a chance encounter in a bar, she meets a man that claims that she is the perfect embodiment of the heroine in his next novel. She agrees to recount her childhood to him, to tell him her most private feelings of adolescence. But she is suspicious of who the writer is, and finding out proves difficult. She wants to be a writer herself, however, and so the writer intrigues her. She tries to learn from him as he is trying to learn from her. But the writer remains vague about his own work and constantly shifts the focus back to her. The strength of this book lies in how Barille's lyrical prose shows us the darkest, most private moments in the narrator's life. I always keep a file with great quotes from books, and so far Body of a Girl has the most quotes in the file. Barille really gets to the heart of a young woman exploring her sexuality and how it relates to herself and the men in her life. Great read. Definitely recommended.
