In 1971, we are halfway through the Seven Lean Years, the years when Dylan mostly sits by the side of the river, waiting for the inspiration for a masterpiece. Then, in January 1971, a belated Christmas present from Leon Russell floats by: a tape with five covers of his songs. He invites Russell to a joint session in New York, and out of that comes the two songs that, fifty years later, are on the setlist for two hundred nights in the Rough And Rowdy Ways World Tour 2021-2024 . "Watching The River Flow" even features as the standard opening - apparently the song has a special place in Dylan's heart. "Watching The River Flow" and "When I Paint My Masterpiece" are the proceeds of that March session with Leon Russell. In November, "George Jackson" and "Wallflower" will be added - and that will be the entire 1971 crop. Four songs. From a man who in the mercurial 1965-66s sometimes shakes four songs a week out of his sleeve. In Bob Dylan's 1971 , Dylan scholar Jochen Markhorst delves into the four songs from that year, the re-recordings of some Basement songs for Greatest Hits Vol. II and the light briefly falls on Leon Russell as well - the inspiration, music supplier and session musician on all four songs from that Lean Year 1971.
