The first time I heard about Nalini Warriar was when someone mentioned the winner of the Quebec Writers Federation First Book Award. I was extremely pleased when I finally read her book of short stories, as it is quite engaging, filled with depictions of life on India's Malabar coast. The stories centre around the Variyars, a large and close-knit family and the different perspectives given by the various members of the family are amusing and poignant. It is quite surprising that this is Warriar's first book, as the voices are quite textured and emotional. A great read, and a testament to the strength of the new voices of Canada!
wonderful short stories

Recently while browsing through a book store, I came upon the Canadian section. With time being limited I picked up this book figuring that I could read a story or two and then later read them all. Also I was intrigued because the author had just won a writer's award in Quebec, so I figured that this would be a good bet. I started with the first story and was so content with the fluidity of Ms Warriar's writing that I continued on and read them all. As well, my cultural awareness has also been greatly improved.
