Anne Nelson is not at all enthused about going to a bluegrass music festival soon after the 9/11 attacks in late September 2001. Nonetheless, she travels to a campground in the Blueridge Mountains of Virginia to support her son, whose band is hosting the event. When she arrives, she is astonished to discover that the band's new lead singer and guitarist is her deceased husband's best friend, Dave Anderson - a man whom she had been infatuated with in her youth. As a widow, she struggles with grief and guilt relating to her husband's death as well as an attraction for Dave that still burns within her even though he is married and abandoned her when she needed him. Every year, Anne returns to the annual festival where she develops deep friendships and a growing appreciation for bluegrass music. Every year, the festival delivers humor, drama, and heartache to Anne as she searches for love and faith amid a backdrop of bluegrass songs reflective of life.
