Blood Roots

Blood Roots follows 23- year-old Mica Peterson, a passionate social worker with something missing, wanting to get her hands dirty in the familiar clay of southern Indiana, and troubled 27- year-old Ben Cooper, her older Brother Finn's best friend since infancy. It takes place in rural Shoals, Indiana, population 675. Mica returns to her underserved hometown roots after living in Chicago after college, in order to make a tangible difference for the faces from home she's left behind. Mica may have bitten off more than she can chew. The story dabbles in themes of drug use, suicide, love and sex, rape, family ties, faith, age gaps, domestic violence and trafficking, and most importantly, murder. As Mica helps her friend face down his demons, she must also confront her own ghosts. The story experiments with writing from different points of view from characters, and also with memories from the past carrying into the future through haunting dreams and flashbacks. Think of it as a film playing out. Both Mica and Ben have a story unfolding here, and those stories were connected and set in motion before they were even old enough to walk. Their stories tap into the power of our roots, blood ties, nature, empathy, being true to yourself, forgiveness, faith, trauma, and the pull over two decades of love and friendship can harness.
