Four migrant workers are murdered on Phillip Crowe's farm deep in the legendary pine barrens of New Jersey. Behind the murders is Martin Kanski, CEO of Atlantic City's largest casino. Unknown to Crowe, Kanski desperately needs Crowe's land, which at one time was the site of an Indian burial ground. Kanski believes he will be granted a license for a mega casino venture since joining him in his scheme are a group of Native Americans, Russian mobsters and a United States Senator with a dark secret. The story moves from crisis to crisis as Crowe, a former CIA advisor and his diminutive friend, John Bolton, one of Vietnam's legendary tunnel rats fight for their land and their lives. Crowe's obsessive quest to avenge the killing of his worker friends leads to numerous confrontations with the criminal outlaw bikers, the Razors, who operate under the direction of Kanski's psychotic head of security, Peter Klein. The war between Crowe and the Razors rages from the gang owned nightclubs and streets of Atlantic City to the remote wilds of the Pine Barrens. During the course of the book the reader is introduced to many of the morally deficient movers and shakers of Atlantic City and also the colorful denizens of the Pine Barren's fictional Lincoln Township such as the crazed hermit of the pines and the reptile man.
