Blood Red River

Although this book started out slowly for me, it did not take long to become completely involved up in the story. As a lover of the Old West I have read many books on the Native American and the settling of the West. This book has to be the most unbiased narrative I have ever read. Throughout the book I found myself both empathetic and repulsed by both Indians and Whites. Both had their good and bad traits; but, they always held my attention fully. Whether an action situation or a conversational situation, the story rolls. You will not find yourself skimming and skipping in this book. Yes, the book has flaws. In some cases I wanted just a little more information. My major concern with the book dealt with descriptive details. Lucas just does not paint pictures as well as I am sure he is capable. He had the opportunity to really make some of the wonderful scenes he created uncomfortably real. He fell short. I believe this to be his first book; hopefully his palette will have expanded by the time his next book is released. I know I will be on the waiting list! Nothing is perfect, so overall I have to give this book FIVE STARS. "Blood Red River" was a joy.
