November 20th, 1943, the Tarawa Atoll in the South Pacific. The 2nd Marine Division's orders were to secure the island as quickly as possible. The consensus among the general staff was that the task would be finished by noon, and the Marines would be back aboard ship and dining on steaks that evening. Three days later, and over 3,500 casualties later, the island was declared secured.Private Tom Williams and Gunnery Sergeant Ryan Walter were in the first wave to land on the island. At least 50% of the Marines that landed with them never made it off the beach. This is their story of that fight. As for Tom, just a year earlier he was in high school enjoying the things a seventeen year old should...sports, dances, and girls. In his case one girl in particular: Sherry Grammer. This is also a story of the bond the young couple developed, and the love they shared.
