Blood and Spirit: The Jivaro Headhunters of the Upper Amazon
In the dense rainforests of the Upper Amazon, along the rivers that cut through the eastern slopes of the Andes in what is now Ecuador and northern Peru, lived a people the outside world came to know as the Jivaro. Drawing on early ethnographic accounts, explorer narratives, and later anthropological studies, Blood and Spirit reconstructs the rhythm of Jivaro life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: the fortified household, the raid, the preparation of the tsantsa far from enemy territory, the long sequence of ceremonial feasts, and the complex spiritual landscape of shamans, spirit helpers, and ancestral forces. The book also traces how these practices declined under pressure from national governments, missionaries, and changing economic conditions, while the image of the Jivaro headhunter endured in Western imagination.
