I would rate this one as an equal to the Sharpe series. The initial time period covered is one little written about. With both world wars coming up, the conflicts we participated in at the turn of the century seem to be forgotten. What is most interesting is that the time period then and our current involvement abroad seem to have some parallels. Can't wait to read the next one!

In this exciting novel we are introduced to a man who must endure deadly conflicts in the Battle of Manila Bay and the Boxer Rebellion. The year is 1898 and America is on the verge of becoming an imperial power. The book begins with the U.S. Navy sailing to Manila Bay to engage the Spanish. The hero, ex-cowboy from Wyoming, Levi Rankin, is a member of the U.S. Marine Corps on the U.S.S. Olympia and is about to experience his baptism of fire. The action never stops and continues to the Philippines and China, just in time for the Boxer Rebellion. The first of a six-part series, this is one book you can't put down 'til its done.
