This book was about Rich Gaskins moving to a new town called Marchmont, and finding out about the town's racial problems when he joins the marchmont basketball team, which is made up of mostly blacks. The team plays poorly because the blacks dislike Rich. The rest of the book is about how Rich can make his team become better. I thought this book was good. If I were to rate it from 1-10, I would give it an 8 because I enjoyed the book in some parts, but other parts were boring. I also thought the author did a very good job of combining racial problems with basketball, because if it didn't have the basketball part, I wouldn't have liked this book that much. I also thought that this book could have had a better ending. I think the author should make a sequel to this book, so readers could find out what happens to all the characters after high school.
Awesome

What a book!On a scale from one to ten I rate this book a ten. It is a great book. I liked it so much because there were sudden turns of events that really surprise you. It is also just a well written book. It is also just an absolutely wonderful story. It almost seems like you know the characters personally. This is the first time I have read a book of this topic or by this author. So it was a great book to start on. This will not be the last book I read by this author or on this topic. I really do hope you read this book. I think that you will really enjoy this book. I just can't tell you how much I enjoyed it. There isn't a word for it.
Fantastic!

I found this book last year in my middle school library. (which seems to have a lot of old-yet-good, out of print books) At first I was a bit hesitant to read it, because I'm not too into basketball, but this book is about a lot more than basketball. The main character (I have forgotten his name, it's been more than a year since I read it) wants to join the school basketball team. 1 problem; He's white, and this is set in either the 50's or 60's. (not sure) All the other members of the basketball team are black, and are hesitant to accept him. But gradually he becomes good friends with them, and even falls in love with a black girl. The team is doing well, and so is this guy's life, but then he has to face the racism of some of the other white students who don't think he should be spending so much time with his black team members. This is a really good book, and both guys and girls will like it. You'll like it if you like basketball, but also if you don't.
