In 2015, my daughter received her diagnoses - sensory processing disorder and life-limiting anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). We were stuck in the midst of an absolute mess of an existence. All the therapeutic interventions. All the sleepless nights - because anxiety doesn't sleep even if mom does desire sleep. All the suffering of wanting more for our daughter and life.

Yet, in it all there was still joy. And each day I began to understand more and more, this -

Joy and suffering coexist.

Always.

When I wrote Bliss & Blue, I had no idea that God was using it to show me this in our real, raw life. The complete story came to me at midnight one evening on my yoga mat - the only safe space and time I could find to practice and pray in solitude. It came, and it wouldn't let me go.

Thus, Bliss & Blue needed to be birthed. She had to make her way into the world. And most specifically, because this story isn't just ours. To date, I have met thousands of special needs parents who look like me and many, many gorgeously special, medically fragile, and neurodivergent children like our Bliss (and Blue's previous owner) along this path. This kind of experience of motherhood can be such a tender life space! Here, too often we forget to look up - to look for miracles in the messy and mundane.

But they exist.

And we witnessed them first hand through our bunny named Blue.

My greatest joy would be for this sweet story to cause even one other mother, father, caregiver, family, or child to look for the unexpected blessing in a moment, season, or time when life feels hard. May this sweet, simple story about two children with different needs - and a bunny who paved the way for both to thrive - be a light for you and your family.
