Mr. Kunkel evokes the warm, hometown atmosphere of Wisconsin in this fine collection of short stories. Interesting characters abound, ranging from an impressionable teenage boy to a group of lifelong buck hunters. Lake Michigan schooner captains, World War II homefront heroes, lovers, and stubborn farm families inhabit the well-woven tales. Plot lines evolve around everyday problems. Several of the yarns are set in and around Kiel, Wisconsin, which is not a fictional town. I thoroughly enjoyed Bless Ewe - and yes, there are sheep involved!
