Joy Murumba-Vass was born in September of 1939 in Ankole - western Uganda - at a time when the Kingdom of her ancestors was experiencing an upheaval that was to impact on the trajectory of her own life. In these memoirs, she vividly describes how and why. From being one of the first Ugandan girl guides, to studying midwifery at St. Thomas Nursing School, and thereafter having daily interactions with Winston Churchill, Joy also experienced firsthand the horrors of the Amin regime. There was also the overthrow, return, and eventual expulsion of the Obote government, a difficult personal time during which she was forced to part with her children. In these memoirs, the author offers a rollercoaster firsthand narrative of the events that shaped her life, and how they influenced her own offspring, and theirs too. Resilience, empathy and love for family are painted vividly as a result...how a girl-child became Black Nightingale and ultimately, a Magic Granny. Joy currently resides in Mbarara, surrounded by all of her loved ones, exactly where her story began.
