Book Overview

Freddi's life is over. Her best-and only-friend needed her and she failed. After a series of bad decisions, Freddi is pulled out of music school and forced to prove herself, but a new school and volunteer work only add to her overwhelming anxiety. Freddi finds a potential new friend in Lorna, who forces her to face her insecurities head on, but Freddi isn't ready to let go. When Freddi learns Lorna is keeping something from her, their friendship starts to crumble. Now Freddi must choose between chasing her past or rebuilding her future.

Messy friendship....Great book.

Black Licorice dives into the messy business of new friendships and how complicated they can be when you carry baggage from your past along for the ride. Freddie and Lorna are two young girls who found each other’s quirkiness exciting and fresh. Their recent individual pasts muddy the waters of their budding friendship. One insists on allowing a post-mortem of her failed relationship affect the new friendship, while the other seems to lack the empathy to allow her to find an outlet to work through it. It seems, at least to me, that the disagreement about whether the past has a place in their new world brings out the worst in each of them. This story was a perfect example of how relationships between two people, any two people, cannot exist in only the ‘present’. The past must be folded in to form a meaningful connection between two real humans. It is not until the characters connect on that level that they finally manage to bring the BEST out of each other. It is refreshing to read about a friendship rather than a romantic relationship, especially one that is full of ugly bumps and bruises. Excellent book, very relatable, and full of soul.
