The history of Blacks in Greer is mostly in the remembrance of our 70, 80, and 90 year old family and friends. Some of the history is scattered in various places; libraries, churches, mantels, and walls of current and former residents. The History Committee's effort was to record as much information through talks with some who are experiencing memory loss and those who just prefer not to remember certain events and times. We primarily documented samplings of the lives of Blacks in the Greer area. We found it fulfilling to recall fond memories and even unpleasant moments as we investigated the hardships, struggles, and achievements of an unconquerable people whom others wanted in the shadows. However, much of what is to follow is from the perspective of the development of the Black communities through businesses and services; tremendous church influences; our teachers; and family support as well as good citizenship. Most evident was the resilience, perseverance, hard work, and collective support for each other that provided opportunities for our growth. We pray you will enjoy and obtain something from our history. While reading, you may smile and even laugh, as we did
