I am a 16 year old Revolutionary War re-enactor from South Carolina, and I live about an hour and a half away from Camden, SC, where the story took place. Black Crows and White Cockades has been the best book written about a Southern Rev War family I've ever read. Not only was all the information about the various battles mentioned in Dr. Swager's book extremely accurate, but the characters in the book, particularly Ann, were easy to relate to, which brought the story to life. Black Crows kept me reading and interested until the very last page. Masterful!
School children will be spellbound with story action

Living history facts are excellent. This is what is so great about this fiction, it's based on non-fiction and this gives the book a special niche where school children will be held to the story, but being subjected to how life was at this uncertain time in American history.
Accurate and lively!

I am pleased that the high school where I teach in Camden, SC, is adding this fine title to summer reading choices for English III (American Literature) students. The book is historically accurate and lively. I anticipate students will be attracted by the main character near their age, become engrossed in the mystery and love story which evolve, and--oh, yes--gain knowledge from the details of the Revolution as fought in our community. Much little-known authentic material comes to life: tensions of divided loyalties; sufferings of women and children while men are away; minority contributions; and desperate partisan tactics in a new kind of warfare. Overall, the novel is (as the introduction states) "a good read" as well as a wholesome one.
One of the best children's books on the American Revolution

As a student of the America Revolutionary War, I found this to be a very well researched and accurate depiction of life during the struggle for American independence. The author has done a very excellent job of recreating the lives of these youngsters, and the struggle to understand and to cope with the tragedy of a country at war. I hope to see more from like this in the future.Charles Wallace Gilbert, SC
A book that is both entertaining and educational, Bravo!

My daughter is in eighth grade and studies South Carolina history as part of her curriculum this year. I purchased Black Crows and White Cockades for her as a Christmas gift. It was a wonderful investment. We both enjoyed the book immensely. The historical accuracy is astounding and reinforced her studies. I have loaned my copy to her teacher in hopes that he will suggest it as reading for his classes in the future. It gives a truly realistic picture of the life of a teenager in South Carolina during the Revolutionary War that I feel the students can relate to. Bravo to Mrs. Swager and I look forward to a sequel. Roxanna Martin, Woodruff, S.C.
