I knew better...

The premise is interesting, but S.M. Stirling is a tell, not show sort of author. We don't get the chance to discover anything about the characters based on their actions, dialogue, etc.; their every thought and motivation is laid out plainly for us in wall-of-text internal monologues that go on for pages. I wasn't a fan of his Emberverse books for the same reason, but figured I'd give him a second chance. DNF'd after ~150 pages.
