As one of America's outstanding karate instructors and holder of the black belt degree since 1959, author Roth shares his knowledge of karate based on decades of practice and experimentation. Over 800 techniques and exercises and more than 1,800 photographs reveal the speed and power inherent in properly taught karate. Part One is a general introduction to the history and various rules and formalities of karate. Part Two is devoted to training -- focusing on vital areas of the body, weapons, stances, blocks, attacks, special exercises and more. Part Three covers the elements of sparring such as creating openings, breaking the opponent's balance and closing distances.
A fantastic and classic karate text book by the late Jordan Roth

It is with great honor and pleasure that I have the opportunity to review the late Jordan Roth's great book, Black Belt Karate. I have the first edition hardcover copy, which was given to me by Mr. Roth June 15th, 1978. We met at a Police Defensive Tactics Instructor's seminar and quickly became friends. He not only signed my copy but also wrote, "Joe, To a rightous martial artist. If I had to work the street again I'd like you for a partner." Even though I had been a police and martial arts instructor for many years, I learned a lot from him at the seminar. We had became friends quickly because we both practiced Shotokan Karate. Indeed, Mr. Roth was a student of Master Tsutomu Ohshima. In fact, Mr. Roth was given the nick name of "Iron Fist" because of his powerful punches. This 379 page text covers all the basic blocks, punches, strikes, kicks and sparring techniques of Shotokan Karate. It is fully illustrated with over 1800 photographs. In conclusion, this is a book that will be of interest to all serious karate students. It is a fantastic book. Rating: 5 stars. Joseph J. If you need one book on karate, this is the one to have!Written in a very clear no-nonsense style with ample photogaraphic coverage of each technique discussed.Covers it all, from basic hand and foot moves to combinations thereof and sparring, with one partner or several.Especially impressive is the chapter on foot techniques, which discusses front, back, side and roundhouse kicks and how to master them from different angles and positions.Whether you're into karate as sport or exercise this book should definitely foot the bill (no pun intended).Jordan,if you are out there, let us know what you've been up to as we could use another book of your expertise. technique
