This book introduces 20 bizarre birds from around the world including such oddities as non-flying kiwis to cave-dwelling oilbirds. The first chapter asks the question What Is A Bird? Miller gives us a working definition. In the following chapters she shows us fabulous exceptions. Her commentary is clear and well-written. The information in the sidebars is fascinating. Who knew that those oilbirds from Venezuela have such oily flesh that the locals boiled them down and used the oil for cooking and filling their lamps. I loved the photographs. Among them were penguins tobogganing on the ice, prehistoric-looking hoatzins sitting peacefully on a branch, and a skimmer skimming the water. With a glossary and online sites, this book would be good for an older child to read and use for reports, and for a younger one to look in wonder at the photos.
