When John W. Findley (1925-2007) was only twenty months old, his mother died and his father, unable to care for and support four young children, sent him, along with two sisters and a brother, to St. Joseph Home in North Little Rock, Arkansas. His father gave the Benedictine Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery a milk cow as partial payment, and promised to send $40-50 a month for their support. While John was there, he found a large extended family, a "mother hen," Sister Herman Joseph Berkemeyer, OSB; and a godmother, Sister Jeannette Yaeger, OSB, who had grown up in the orphanage herself. This commemorative edition of Findley's memoirs is filled with his pictures and supplemented with photos from the monastery archives, taken throughout the orphanage's history. The book features articles from "Horizons," St. Scholastica Monastery's newsletter, "Until the Morning Star Rises: A History of St. Scholastica Monastery, Fort Smith, Arkansas, 1979-2004," and an update from St. Joseph Center, Inc. on the many ways the home continues to minister to the greater Little Rock community.
