Bishop McNamara Catholic School - A One Hundred-Year History is a story of faith, perseverance, exceptional education, and success. It is also a story of a very unique Catholic community founded by the French-Canadian explorers of the Kankakee River Valley in Illinois-followed by Irish, German, and other Catholic immigrant groups, over a two-hundred-year period. The story of the school is one of constant change. Founded in 1922 as a parish high school in Kankakee, Illinois, St. Patrick High School became St. Patrick Central High School in 1955, a diocesan school operated by the Clerics of St. Viator. By the 1960s, it merged with the all-girls' St. Joseph Seminary, run by the Congregation of Notre Dame, to become Bishop McNamara High School. Industry left the area in the 1980s leading to the exit of the Viatorian Order of priests, replaced by the Augustinian Order in the 1900s, and, eventually, an all-lay-operated school. As parishes closed, Catholic schools regionalized into a three-site institution called Bishop McNamara Catholic School, teaching children from pre-kindergarten to twelfth grade. The story of the school mirrors the two-hundred-year history of Catholicism and Catholic Education in all of America. Author Kevin McNulty, Sr. connects the school's evolution to events in the world, the nation, and the Catholic Church itself. It is a dynamic story of determined supportive parents and teachers who set high standards. The legacy of the school is witnessed by the faith, leadership, character, and achievement of over 10,000 graduates of this fine institution. It remains a beacon of excellence and faith in Catholic education, today.
