In "The Backlands," an ancient war has just begun... 23 year old Ray Hatcher has been sentenced to a prison mining camp for crimes he did not commit and is looking for his way out, the people keeping him silent, murdered his best friend Ben and why. Mining the dangerous cliff sides alongside the lizard like slave species called the Cydarians, Ray strikes gold when he finds a Cydarian form mech called a biomech buried in the rusty rock. A relic of the past and his key to the future. The only problem is only a Cydarian can "bond" with the mech serving as its host and operating it. Hope of finding a Cydarian partner seemed slim until a fall down the cliffs nearly kills him and a Cydarian doctor named Sy saves his life. With Sy as his new partner they prepare to escape but in a freak accident the biomech bonds with Ray instead of Sy, which should not be possible. Now on the run, Ray and Sy set out to find the answers and hunt down those who killed Ben. Problem is they are the ones being hunted and by bonding with the biomech, Ray has signed himself up for war.
