Chronic illnesses present a challenge in societies characterised by ever-advancing medical and technological progress, effective drug treatments and the associated increase in life expectancy. Those affected are increasingly faced with the task of having to live with this illness over a prolonged period or even for their entire lifetime. In doing so, they must continually ask themselves how they can cope. This study examines the extent to which the attribution and interpretation of meaning regarding chronic illnesses can influence coping with the illness and its progression within a biographical context.
