Biochemistry

A concise core text for use in Biochemistry courses in medical school and other health related fields. While many textbooks encompass this complex subject, none succeed as effectively as this new resource. A veteran professor of biochemistry, Robert Roskoski, Jr., has adapted his proven teaching strategies into a unique approach that makes biochemistry and molecular biology uncommonly accessible and relevant to medicine and health-related sciences. Biochemistry encourages readers to understand the fundamental principles of biochemistry - rather than memorising dry facts and formulas. These principles, printed on the inside front cover of the book and integrated throughout, make it easier for readers to grasp the whys of biochemistry and molecular biology. No other biochemistry textbook uses this approach.
Focuses on topics that are medically relevant, omitting such extraneous subjects as photosynthesis in plants.Includes material not generally found in university courses of general biochemistry -such as enzyme analysis in the diagnosis of diseases, drugs as enzyme inhibitors, and the genetic basis of diseases including cancer.
Presents Dr. Roskoski's eight principles of biogenergetics. These provide useful guidelines for understanding and analyzing the individual steps that make up metabolic reactions, helping to make sense out of what can otherwise seem a bewildering series of processes.Offers clinical correlations throughout the text, using common, contemporary medical conditions as examples.
Contains more than 500 2-colour figures and over 100 helpful tables that make the material easier to absorb.

Perfect intro to biochemistry for students of all levels

I found this book extremely useful in studying for the biochemistry portion of the board exams (Step 1 USMLE). It was very concise, expertly written, and thus, easy to follow. I would rather have had this book as the primary text in the medical biochemistry course. I highly recommend this book to my fellow medical students. The convincing earlier review persuaded me to buy it, and I wasn't disappointed.

Excellent as supplement/major text in a biochemistry course

I had the pleasure of using Biochemistry by Roskoski in a graduate level biochemistry course. We used it in conjunction with Biochemistry by Garrett and Grisham. The Roskoski text is remarkable in its simplicity and amount of depth in such a well-written, compact style. There are mentions of clinical correlations to go along with discussions of classic biochemistry concepts. It should be noted that the author has both the M.D. and Ph.D. degrees. The figures are extremely useful, and the last chapter entitled Integration of Metabolism I have found to be an invaluable reference tool. Also, it is one of the only biochemistry books I have seen to have a chapter that discusses aspects of cancer and proto-oncogenes, as well as the classical biochemical pathways. This book is a must have for those continuing to study biochemistry. I am involved in research involving metabolism and I highly recommend it.
