Book Overview

No one wants to be labeled a whiner, but many of us go through life with a "poor me," victim mentality that sounds a whole lot like whining. God never intended for us to act like "little girls," says Jan Silvious. His goal is for each of us to live as "big girls"-mature Christian women-who are capable of enjoying the richness of life He has planned.

In Big Girls Don't Whine, Jan helps women:

Real Strength for Life

Almost ignored this treasure because of what I thought was a frivolous name. Only a book for women who really want to grow up and help others to grow up also. This book was used in a large group of women, and it was amazing to see the hope and caring as women opened up to share with each other. This is a very meaty book, but an easy read. You will wonder why you have not heard of it before, and why this author is not internationally known. Tackling tough topics for tough times, Big Girls Don't Whine offers hope for women today.

Learning How to be a Grown Up Christian woman.

This book can be read alone, but is best when done as a study in a group setting. It has been very helpful in seeing areas in which we all need to "Grow Up" and act and react as mature, loving Christian women. This book is good for any woman who wants to make her relationships with all those around her more respectful, loving and peaceful.

Excellent!

Jan Silvous has a warm, hilarious personality that makes her books easy to read but still heart-penetrating. This one in particular was wonderful for me. Not only did she find a non-preachy way to help me see where some of my weaknesses were, but she also helped me learn to overcome them, to be a "big girl". The chapter on overcoming insecurity was especially meaningful. This is a great book to read (with a very unique take on well-worn topics) and I think it would fit great in a book club or small group setting as well.

Little Girls Can Grow Up

I laughed at the title, but that laugh was pure nervousness. Was there really immaturity in my whining? Little did I know, that and more.Jan Silvious shares the secrets to finding - becoming - that Big Girl you always wanted to be when you were little. The same Big Girl who elusively hid after you left home, got lost in your laundry and fowled up your marriage by missing the boat. Jan is truthful, humorous, convicting and loving all in the same paragraph. It makes the "ouch!" concepts easier to assimilate.I concluded several years ago that there was more to spiritual growth than memorizing facts about God. I just lacked the description of what true spiritual maturity looks like lived out. Silvious has done a splendid job comparing and contracting behaviors to paint a picture of what maturity should look like in grown women. The scary thing? Realizing that there are basketsful of immature, whiny adult women walking the streets. Scarier? Realizing you're one of them! What excited and challenged me as I read this book was the comparison and contrast of immature Little Girl thinking to mature Big Girl thinking. Silvious logically laid out why some behaviors like whining, grudge holding, smothering friendships and a whole slew of others are immaturity waiting to blow up in your face. I like how she followed through to show how these behaviors and consequences play out in the lives of singles, married women and moms. This is not just a book for married women with kids!If you struggle with crisis and conflict, the two large chapters on those alone are worth the price of the book. But don't read it for just those two chapters, you'll miss gems in the others. When you're done reading, you'll want to be a Big Girl too.
