Sexual abuse is a topic that can make parents and caregivers uncomfortable. It is a difficult conversation to have, but one that is needed. Not talking to your child can make him or her more vulnerable for a sexual predator. 1/9 girls and 1/53 boys under the age of 18 experience sexual abuse or assault at the hands of an adult.
As adults, we are responsible for ensuring that our children have safe, stable, loving relationships and environments. While the author comes from a family deeply impacted by sexual abuse, she started this series to have an open dialogue with her son in an attempt to empower and prevent him from seeing what she experienced. In words, she wish she heard as a little bear.
