BIBLICAL CHRISTIANITY IN NATIVE AMERICAN LIFE: Cultural Dilemmas and Biblical Direction

In Navajo Bible Church in Fort Defiance, Arizona, some second and third generation Christians began experimenting with their Native religions. Some were offspring of leaders in the church. Others, because of youthful rebellion, perhaps, experienced emptiness and a void and began to question if Christianity were the way for them. They began listening to the assertion of contemporary Christian leaders and traditionalists that there is an "Indian way" for the Indian to reach God. The fact of the matter is a person's true identity is not found in one's culture. Rather, it is found in Christ, not as defined by culture, but as revealed in biblical scripture - the Bible. The Apostle Paul once prided himself in his adherence to traditional religion with the greatest of zeal and self-disciplined compliance. Then he met the Creator, Lord Jesus Christ. True life change transformed his life. Is new identity became Christ and Christ alone. Knowing Christ Above All Else But whatever was gain to me I count as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that, I count all things as loss compared to the surpassing excellence of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God on the basis of faith....(Philippians 3:7-9).
