Corith and the crew of a research vessel are driven off course by a freak storm into the Beyond. The Beyond is a taboo boundary that the church teaches means exile and abandonment by the Creator. Despite this Corith and his adoptive gaurdian, Professor Aldred, endeavor to discover a way to return. They are thwarted at every turn by the ship's clergyman, the Pryator. The situaiton gets interesting as they discover that things in the Beyond are not like what they were taught.
