In the first two books in this trilogy, Zan Kovac was trying to uncover his late father's secret with regards space aliens hence the series title Beyond the Silence. Here this theme is brought to conclusion. The Hindel 59 a Krarl built spaceship that'd been captured earlier is used on a spying mission that goes disastrously wrong. Zan is rescued by the aliens and with them as allies goes on to play a pivotal role in the Battle of Connors Platform. Then later he's involved in the first attempted settlement of the planet Cyanagenta, a primaeval Earth-like world that poses real challenges to would be colonisers.
This story explores the weird outcomes of human genetic engineering. The Krarls, clone warriors who threaten everything and the Flavians with their infra red vision. But also the culture and technology of the mysterious aliens of the Amaran Federation, the true nomads of the galaxy who call no planet home.
This is a story of space travel, unexpected alliances and murderous treachery of love and loss of monsters in both human and alien form and above all the struggle for survival.
