There is a surprisingly brief historiography on the first African American heavyweight boxing champion, Arthur Jack Johnson. From Farr to Al Tony Gilmore and Randy Roberts and Geoffrey C. Ward, there's not much in between. This book focuses on Johnson and his aspirations to not see color and move up the social class ladder, when the world around him continues to do so. This was originally a MA thesis and was expanded into a book. The research utilizes primary material from microfilm and the Jack Johnson file at the Schaumburg Center in Harlem.
