Beyond Careless is a novel that explores how childhood patterns re-surface in an adult character's stumbling attempts at love and intimacy. Morgan is an emotionally under-developed man in his early-thirties who writes for a Seattle magazine. When his ex-girlfriend signs him up for a ten-day life writing retreat, his editor boss turns it into a job and he is thrust into an environment where honesty is the valued currency and the other participants are female.

Just as Morgan starts to probe the emotional underpinnings of his life, he falls prey to a married woman who leaks narcissistic need. As his attempts to possess her grow more extreme, and her behaviour becomes erratic and impenetrable, Morgan faces a difficult choice: lose himself entirely, or develop his emotional capacity and risk losing Eve. Their tortured relationship and Morgan's suppressed anxiety over ageing parents and the sale of his family home create an emotional maelstrom he must navigate and understand in order to claim his innate value.
