In the Viking age, raiders tore the lands of Wessex and Mercia apart in an endless cycle of war until a peace agreement was reached. This allowed former Vikings to have a foothold in Normandy. With their new lands, the Normans protected the interests of their people and their neighbors. Unfortunately, hostilities and plots of revenge and assassination were rampant. Normans and those of similar stock were under constant threat of death. History would soon change at the Battle of Hastings.

This book is a spinoff of the Blade, Buckler, Bastion series and takes place after Blade, Buckler, Bastion/Blade, Buckler, Bastion: The Illuminated Edition. It is not essential to read Blade, Buckler, Bastion/Blade, Buckler, Bastion: The Illuminated Edition before reading this book since the events contained are referenced in part, and without spoilers. Regardless, this book is a companion piece to the Blade, Buckler, Bastion series.

A young woman barely escapes in one piece as she leaves behind the only home she has ever known. A wounded man watches in horror as his home burns to ashes. A lone mercenary is attacked by his neighbors and must fight for his life and kin. Stories like these echoed throughout the end of the Viking age as peace treaties arranged for former Vikings were often ignored. The Battle of Hastings would soon decide if peace could truly be enforced.

The following is a work of fiction inspired by the historical period known as the Viking Age. Life was hard. People fought to survive the untamed, natural world. Cultures clashed. Lives were lost. Cruelties were justified in the brutality of war. The faith and reason of the people were tested beyond what they could have possibly imagined.
This was the time where everything was filled with uncertainty.
