Between The Testaments: The 400 "Silent" Years

"Between The Testaments" is a booklet of four lessons designed as a complement to "The Bethel Series," an overview study of the Bible (Madison, Wisconsin). All churches enrolled in the Bethel Series can benefit from this booklet of lessons on the so-called "400 Silent Years" (Malachi to Matthew). Churches of all denominations would benefit with this study, for few Christians have an understanding and working knowledge of the history, literature, and institutions of the period. The four lessons include the following: 1) A History of the "400 Silent Years"; 2) The Rise of Judaism: Her Institutions; 3) Birth of a New Literature; and 4) Means and Ends: Theological Development in Judaism. A symbolic picture for all four lessons allows a student to easily memorize the history and some of the literature and institutions that arose during that time. Assignments for each lesson are given in such a way that both beginning and advanced students may take advantage of the readings: basic or advanced. Each lesson may be taught in more than one session. A multi-page bibliography is primarily for the teacher who wishes to deepen his/her knowledge of the period between the Testaments. This study will give any student a strong background for understanding not only the period of 2nd Temple Judaism but also the New Testament.
