Dr. Z made his name with a system for wagering in the place and show pools where he showed how to spot horses that were underbet in those positions. He did this by showing what the probability of a horse finishing in the money was based on their win odds. When disproportionate amounts were bet to win as opposed to place or show, Ziemba argued that an inefficiency resulted in an overlay. In this work, Ziemba and Hausch took their analysis into the Daily double, Exactor, and Trifecta pools in search of inefficiency. They deliver with charts showing what expectations are for combinations of odds and then argue that a player should look for spots to take advantage of these. Whether the systems work or not- and I haven't put them to any extended trial- the logic is solid, and a player can learn a lot about how odds are determined. Very solid, not as difficult to understand as you may think, and certainly worth the time and effort to read.
