In Purgatory, the dead relive their most despairing day alive, ignorant of their deaths until the Moon awakens them to their truths. They spend the night mourning their losses, eagerly waiting for the sun to ease their pain by banishing them back into their monotonous graves. Over-and-over again this experience loops until the day it doesn't; some people go to Heaven, others go to Hell, but no one stays in Purgatory forever... except Miles. Miles is a therapist in Purgatory trying to help people move on. In Better Than Heaven, he meets with a crew of people that died of Heroin overdoses and have been in Purgatory ever since. His mentor, Dez, abandoned Heaven on a quest to destroy the Demon of Addiction, only to find herself, once again, a slave to Heroin. At night, Miles' spirit collects the souls of the recently departed and shepherds them to Purgatory. A dark shepherd known as the Wraith, locks Miles out of the Spirit World and consumes all of the souls he was destined to shepherd. In addition to this assault, the Wraith's army of Reapers searches for Miles, his dog Butch, and the girl he has a crush on, Emily.
