Love, death and recovery. Better Half, set in early 1970s New Orleans, is a book about young couples stumbling into love amid the splendor of the Big Easy. In some cases it leaves justice undone and as a result people either thrive or die. It's real and it happens every day. Over the course of two years, the young couple survive hurricanes, Mardi Gras and boating accident on Lake Pontchartrain. This is no simple happy romance, although in some cases important breakthroughs allow the survivors to achieve fulfillment. People grow, some good people hurt others or are hurt themselves, in some cases irreparably, but it's worth it. It deals with young relationships in ways that reflect what happens when grappling with the mystery of life together. Nonetheless, it is imbued with humor and steeped in pathos.
