Han Yu-tai, and millions of university students like him, believed it when Mao Tse-dong proclaimed "let a hundred flowers bloom, let a hundred schools of thought contend", but his and their naiveness was shattered by the People's Army in Tiananmen Square on June 4th, 1989. Fleeing China to continue his crusade against those in power, he is granted political asylum in Taiwan. However, he is betrayed and branded a dissident by the National Government for joining their political nemesis, the Taiwan Liberation Party. Han is arrested by the Taiwan authorities, escapes and then is held prisoner by the party he thought would be his salvation. This is also the story of four Americans on a sabbatical who make port in Taiwan and how their lives become intertwined with that of Han Yu-tai through a common denominator: two beautiful women
