Bethel: The dwelling place of the God of Jacob

The patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are quite remote from us. The events that we now find in the book of Genesis happened more than thirty five centuries ago. With whom of these three do we feel the strongest links? We look up to Abraham, the father of all believers, and we also have a great respect for Isaac, the man of calm confidence in God. Indeed, we would not dare to compare ourselves with Abraham or Isaac.

But Jacob is much more like we are. With him we can identify more easily-continuously devising our own plans, with which we get under God's feet, so to speak, the trouble God takes to achieve His goal for His children. We see all these things in Jacob's life, and we acknowledge them in our own lives as well. At last, God gets things settled with Jacob. Eventually, He succeeds in bringing him back to Bethel, the house of God, the place of fellowship with God. Even with a stubborn man like Jacob God achieves His goal. What a tremendous encouragement for us

Jacob is a monument of the Holy Spirit's work in the believer. And in our lives as well, God can do what He did in Jacob's life.
