I first found this book at the library when I was a newlywed. I was not a good cook, and I was looking for some help. I needed healthy simple recipes, with common ingredients, but interesting flavors. I brought this book home and found it easy and yummy. These are the traditional recipes that Grandmas brought with them as the came to America from Europe, Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean. Things like Basque Sheepherder's Bread, Danish Aeblekage (apple cake), German Pea soup with Bacon, Greek roast leg of lamb, Hungarian sauerkraut soup, Irish stew, Jewish blintzes, Polish Krupnik, Swedish Glogg. The author says that she was inspired to write this book when she was trying to replicate a recipe for a friend who could only remember how her grandma's Polish pierogi tasted. There were no recipes available that came close, so they experimented and experimented until they got it right. That set the author on a quest to find more comfort food from the past that Grandmas made from memory. These are not recipes that call for a can of Cream of Mushroom Soup and a package of pre-grated cheese. These tell you to go get the cabbage, onions, carrots, and a sprig of rosemary, so they are full of vitamins, flavors, and comfort. Now I am remarried, and my new husband is a Foody. We have many great recipe books, standard ones like Fanny Farmer, and specialty books like 30 Minute Meals, but this is our favorite because it makes things that taste like long ago. We are giving this book to everyone for Christmas; no one will mind if their copies are used because the recipes are so yummy.
