At the end of the school year, Issy Schmidt travels alongside her two sisters to Crete with her mother, Mary, and stepdad, Jonas. While vacationing in paradise, they encounter Rosa and Michael, a couple from Marys past in New Zealand, and Issy finds herself most taken by their son, Will. After strong familial disputes and an irrevocable betrayal destroy the peace of the holiday, both families split, causing a chasm between young new lovers. Back in Berlin, Issy and her sisters commence the second half of their summer with their father and stepmother. Though their mother is not present on the German island of Norderney, Issy learns much about Marys past. Disheartened at her mothers announcement of marital woes, the girls return home at once, only to simmer before more tragedy and the arrival of woes.
