Benjamin Forrest Williams shepherded the collection at the North Carolina Museum of Art from its inception in 1949 until his retirement as Chief Curator in 1979. During that time, the Museum grew from a one-room gallery in downtown Raleigh to the internationally recognized institution it is today. During his long life in art, Ben formed alliances with artists and craftsmen from all over the world. In 1989 Ben was awarded the Raleigh Medal of Honor for the arts by the NC Department of Cultural Resources. At the age of 89, he has continued to paint and sculpt and has led a critique group of the region's finest artists for over thirty years.
