Belle Starr, the first white woman murdered in Indian Territory in 1889, was born to an influential Southern family. Yet their fanaticism to the Confederate cause led her and her brothers into lives of infamy. She followed a life based on her lifelong passion for horses and supported her first husband's and her brothers' guerrilla raids as Quantrill's 'irregulars.'

Belle hung with infamous horse thieves-the Younger Brothers and Jesse and Frank James-and took the initiative to organize robberies and rode with gangs or horse rustlers. Finally run out of Dallas, she took refuge in Indian Territory, now Oklahoma, where she married Cherokee Sam Starr, the love of her life.

Later, she became devoted to giving money and aid to uneducated or Indigenous prisoners. She said with pride, "I am a friend to any brave and gallant outlaw."
