Belle infidèle [French]

By Romane Lafore

Lost in translation?

Julien Sauvage is a translator of Italian who dreams of writing his own novel: an exquisite account of a romantic break-up. To help him get over the beautiful French-Italian Laura who trampled all over his heart. But a Paris-based editor unexpectedly asks him for an urgently needed translation of an acclaimed Italian novel, Rebus. The author, Agostino Leonelli, is sensationally talented.
As he works on the translation, Julien is catapulted back to the red soil of Puglia, the spiny leaves of prickly pears and gardens bursting with luxuriant plants overlooking the sea. He delves into the Years of Lead, a time that his old mentor Salvatore - a bookseller exiled in Paris - avoids mentioning. He sees the luminous Laura again. He embraces all the fluidity and whims of the Italian language... until a suspicion creeps up on him: could the story on which Rebus is based be about him?

Romane Lafore is an editor and a translator of Italian. Belle infid le is her first novel.
