Believe: A Story About Life

Believe is a book focused on helping children understand the stages of life and how to deal with those transitions. As adults, we try to explain life's changes through analogies to encourage hope and a better understanding, but then we forget that after the days go back to normal, after the loss or change, children are still processing. This is why this book, and Valentine the bear, are a way to help believe. Learning to believe is what John had to do the day his best friend, Mr. Caterpillar, transitioned to a butterfly. Mr. Caterpillar knew he couldn't stop the transition, so he decided to leave John a new friend to help comfort him in that moment and future moments of grief. The day Mr. Caterpillar transitioned, John woke up to find a red bear waiting for him next to his bed with a note. Essentially, the note is a goodbye letter to John to help him understand the process. After John reads the note, it gives him hope, and it also gives him an introduction to Valentine. Valentine, a soft red bear, is now a symbol of hope and comfort.
