After breaking up with her lackluster boyfriend, 17-year-old Tanya Ritter decides to shed her religious convictions, too. Despite the strong Christian faith imparted by her mother and stepfather, Tanya decides to go it alone and seek self-worth through academics. While researching a school project, she confronts the abortion debate, causing her to reevaluate the views of her resolutely pro-life mother, Mary.

She and her husband seek help to accept their son's diagnosis through the crisis pregnancy center directed by Tanya's mom. Meanwhile, Emma's sister and her husband, having endured infertility and several failed adoptions, long for a child.
When Tanya discovers she's pregnant, she tells her baby's father, Chuck, but the two can't agree on a plan. Chuck is appalled that Tanya is considering abortion. Indecision and delay lead to a tragic climax which merges the paths of Tanya and Emma, affecting the lives of three families forever.
