The best introductory book for VB

This is the perfect book for self-study and for anyone interested in learning vb with little or no programming experience. The author introduces us to the fundamental concepts of vb and hand guide us to implementing useful vb applications without overwhelming readers with too much information at one time. each concept, each section is written with extreme clarity and gently eases readers to the world of vb. by the end of the book, readers are ready to creating powerful vb applications with a solid understanding of the vb language.Beginning Visual Basic 5 is without a doubt, *the* best introductory book to learning vb. you might want to get Core Visual Basic 5 as your second book for more advanced coverage. good luck!

Beginning Visual Basic 5--Not for Beginners!!!

Having only some foundation in Qbasic, I thought this book would set me on the right path quickly, but I was a bit disappointed, especially after Chapter 4. Peter should spend some time upfront defining in plain English concepts such as Methods, Properties, and Procedures so that when a beginner attemps to understand his esoteric solutions, which delve into topics not even yet covered, they won't be totally confused. If you are a BEGINNER, STAY AWAY FROM THIS BOOK. Since Chapter 4, I decided that I didn't like Peter's teaching style, and so switched to Diane Zak's "Programming with Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0", and I have to confess, THIS IS A TRULY A BEGINNERS TEXT that comes highly recommended from leading Universites in the US. Every comment on Diane book is positive and true--see for yourself. And that's the gospel folks. Sorry Peter, but looks like you have to revise your didactic methods some.

This is a great book!

I use this book to teach university and ZDU classes and it's one of the best on the market. The first half of the book is particularly good for beginners, although the Chapter on Classes (chapter 7), sometimes throws students for a loop (pardon the pun).I should tell you that I wrote the end of chapter questions and answers for the book as well.I have some errata and exercises for the book posted on my Visual Basic website.

Its a great book!

Its a great book. He's gone to a lot of trouble to get his concepts across clearly, and makes the power of visual basic 5 come alive from the pages. He spends time developing the concepts such as objects and classes that VB5 utilises, and goes through an overview of seemingly everything well and in a readable manner. I think you couldn't ask for a better introduction, whether you are a beginner or an intermediate programmer, so if you want to learn VB5, you may as well start here! If you are an advanced programmer I guess you would want to dive straight into some reference manual or something, and this book is not aimed at you! Apparently (according to the epilogue) Peter is currently writing a sequel which goes into more depth about the various development topics of optimising and packaging, advanced database design, etc. I look forward to it.
